What is Pilates

Pilates is the type of exercise that aims to strengthen the body in an even, balanced way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.

The principles of Pilates exercise

Pilates was introduced and developed by German-born Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Joseph based his original work on three principles: Breath, Whole body health and commitment, and Whole body encompassing mind and spirit. Throughout years, these principles have been unpicked and developed with relation to evidence based practice and it is the honouring of the Pilates Principles that the depth of workouts is achieved through. These are as follows: Breath, Concentration, Centering, Control, Precision and Flow.

Health benefits of Pilates

Regular Pilates practise can help improve posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress and tension and reduce lower back pain experience and its reoccurrence. Pilates can be beneficial for muscular pain, posture-related problems, neurological conditions, sports injuries, arthritis and stress related illness.

Pilates can also complement the training of athletes, sportsmen or dancers as it develops the whole body strength and flexibility and helps reduce the risk of injury.

Pilates can also be very helpful during the ante- and post-natal period. Supervised training can not only enable the body to cope with the changes occurring during the pregnancy, but also retrain the muscles that have been affected by the pregnancy and provide a fast return to the pre-pregnancy shape.

Pilates is for everyone

Pilates has something to offer people of all ages and levels of fitness, from beginners to athletes, ante and post-natal women. Children and young adults can also benefit from Pilates training as it has shown to help with developing physical confidence and competence as well as fundamental motor skills (co-ordination, control, balance), allows creativity and imagination as well as building the relationship and understanding between exercise and good health.
