What is Sports Massage

This treatment uses deep manual therapy techniques of the soft tissue (muscles, ligaments and fascia) to help the recovery acute and chronic injuries caused by sports and physical exercise. Sports massage is an effective way to release tension, reduce pain and restore smooth, confident and efficient movement in your musculoskeletal system.

Who is Sports Massage for?

If you play sports or exercise regularly then it’s normal to pick up niggling stresses and strains which can impair performance or inhibit you working out in the way that you would like. A sports massage can help strained soft tissues to heal, desensitise painful areas of your musculoskeletal system and assist your recovery time post-workout, enable you to exercise more frequently and more intensely.

What is Sports Massage like?

By using deeper, more intense pressure and focusing on specific problem areas, sports massage is not designed to be relaxing (see our treatments Deep Tissue Massage or Swedish Massage). A Sports massage is likely to be more intense than a Deep Tissue massage, but should never be painful. Let your therapist know if you are experiencing discomfort and they can ease off the pressure or avoid certain areas if needed. Our sports massage therapists have a high level of knowledge about anatomy, physiology and biomechanics and applies this knowledge to their treatment to improve quality of movement, enhance recovery from injury or exercise and ease pain.

Sports Massage Techniques

At BodyMatters Clinic, we use a number of different sports massage and manual therapy techniques, the precise combination of techniques will be tailored to your specific problems and sporting needs. Some of the most common include trigger point release, deep friction massage, muscle energy techniques (‘contract-relax’ stretching), myofascial release and deep tissue techniques.
