Cognigtive Hypnotherapy
The human brain is like a computer. Constantly ‘googling’, looking for connections between present and past experiences allowing us to function. But what happens when those connections are mismatched? What happens when we come across a perfectly rational situation but our mind and body is hijacked and sends us reeling into an irrational reaction.
That is what cognitive hypnotherapy aims to help. This is a tailor made therapy aimed at helping the individual to re-empower themselves. Our minds are so impressionable often we are unaware of the effects certain experiences have on us. Memories are plastic and perceptions can be changed which means our references can be altered and in turn our unwanted behaviors.
People will come to therapy with all sorts of issues and all sorts of labels for those issues. What cognitive hypnotherapy aims to do is strip away the labels and just look at the individual and their behavioral patterns, how they present and their impact. Together in partnership therapist and client search for the cause and effect of the presenting problems and with a wide range of techniques they work to overcome what isn’t working for the client and enhance what is.
First session can take between 60-90 minutes and consists mainly of a history take. The following sessions are spent using various techniques and interventions. These can include regression, visualizations and word weaving (a modern, made to measure form of hypnotic suggestion).
As for how many sessions are needed. Cognitive hypnotherapy is a short term therapy with long term benefits and it is built around the individual. On that premise it is impossible to say how many sessions one person will need even in comparison to someone else with a similar issue.
Hypnosis
Just to dispel any preconceived notions, hypnosis is not a special state where you are unaware and out of control. On the contrary, Cognitive hypnotherapy works on the basis that hypnosis is a state we enter regularly on a daily basis, daydreaming for example is a hypnotic state as is a state of panic. Most of the time in the therapy room is spent de-hypnotizing clients. Trance used in therapy is usually described as a pleasant experience and you will be fully aware and in control the whole time.
